EMRAST - A Clinically Accurate Scalable Platform
Pioneering early Alzheimer’s Detection Through Scent
Alzheimer’s disease begins in the olfactory cortex, making smell loss a critical early indicator of memory decline. EMRAST is a neuroscience-based, connected platform that enables early diagnosis and treatment
Evon Medics and PENSA collaborated to develop this cohesive platform that integrates precision hardware, respiratory sensing, patient interaction, clinical workflow, and connected data. This diagnostic system transforms olfactory assessment into a precise clinical tool.
Our systems-level design process ensured a unified and intuitive experience for patients, clinicians, and administrators in diagnosing early signs of Alzheimer’s.

The challenge
Evon Medics developed a scent-based neurological assessment method designed to support the early detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment and signs associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Neurological assessment involves more than capturing a result. The conditions surrounding the test can influence the patient experience, the consistency of administration, and the quality of the information collected.
The goal was to turn a complex diagnostic method into a system that patients could understand, clinicians could administer, and Evon Medics could advance toward regulatory review, manufacturing, and broader clinical deployment.

Designing the complete diagnostic experience
Pensa approached EMRAST through systems thinking, considering how every physical and digital touchpoint could work together.
Rather than treating the interface, hardware, and clinical tools as separate components, we developed them into a single connected experience. This allowed the patient journey, clinician workflow, and diagnostic technology to reinforce one another from the beginning.

The result is a platform designed to feel calm and intuitive for patients while providing clinicians with a more consistent and practical way to administer testing.

Engineering precise scent delivery
At the center of EMRAST is a precision scent-delivery system engineered to protect sample integrity and support repeatable administration.
A leak-proof cartridge helps preserve the purity of the scent oils. An accessible release mechanism allows clinicians to replace cartridges quickly between assessments, supporting a more efficient workflow.
Pensa also developed a dual-channel cannula that performs two functions simultaneously: delivering the scent and measuring breathing rate and pressure fluctuations. Its form balances the technical requirements of the assessment with a secure and comfortable patient fit.
Control algorithms compensate for changes in air pressure and other environmental conditions, helping the system maintain consistent scent delivery and reduce variability during testing.
Connecting the device to clinical data
EMRAST’s cloud-based platform organizes patient and assessment information within a more manageable clinical workflow.
Doctors and administrators can navigate patient records, review assessment data, and facilitate testing more efficiently. Connecting the physical assessment directly to the digital platform creates continuity between test administration, data capture, and clinical evaluation.

Creating a platform built to move forward
Pensa helped Evon Medics turn a complex diagnostic technology into a cohesive product platform that could be evaluated as a complete clinical experience, not simply as a technical concept. Our team created a stronger foundation for ongoing regulatory review, future manufacturing, serviceability, clinical deployment, and scale.
For Evon Medics, the value was not one isolated design improvement. It was the resolution of an entire system of interconnected challenges.

Products that solve real-world challenges
In medical innovation, proving that a technology can work is only the beginning.
To create meaningful clinical value, that technology must also be understandable for patients, dependable for clinicians, compatible with real workflows, and designed for the realities of manufacturing, regulation, and scale.
EMRAST shows how integrated product development can help transform novel science into a practical healthcare platform, built for real people, real clinical environments, and the next stage of growth.
